The men on the boat had been trying to get to land but the waves were too strong the closer they got to shore so they had to stay at open sea fighting for their lives for 2 days.

None of them slept in this time yet continued to take turns rowing so that they would survive the ordeal. This shows that humans can find the inner strength to continue with a task because the men had not eaten neither had they slept, both of which can revive a person's strength, yet this did not stop them and they kept going until eventually they swam to shore.
