In “Hiawatha the Unifier,” Ta-ren-ya-wa-gon who was the upholder of the heavens, noticed the sufferings of the people on the earth and came down from the heavens to help them. He unified the Iroquois people according to the legend. He turned himself to a mortal man and led the people in trails known only to him, with a little girl by his side. He assembled the people in a place and built a longhouse to accommodate them all and there, he took care of them for some years.

Later, he began dispersing the people, assigning them to different locations, and giving them their unique names. He also gave them gifts and instructions that would help them survive. The five cities formed through this arrangement include; Onondaga, Mohawk, Oneida,  Goyoga, and Ganundagwa.
