As the title suggests, prejudice is one of the main themes of the novel. Prejudice is one of many obstacles that gets in the way of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy from connecting quickly. For example, Mr. Darcy's prejudice toward Elizabeth is largely because of her social standing. He does not notice the strength of her character for a long time since he is above her in class.

The narrator says, 'Darcy had at first scarcely allowed her to be pretty. . . and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of the fashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness.'
