Which two themes are found in the following passage? Ever since she was a little girl, Tina was afraid of lizards. The mere sight of the reptiles would send her into fits of screaming. However, Tina’s mother always told her that she should not judge a book by its cover. Tina was quite surprised when she discovered that her new neighbor, Mr. Pamuk, was a herpetologist who studied lizards! Gathering all her courage, Tina went over to Mr. Pamuk’s house, determined to know what a herpetologist does. Mr. Pamuk, a patient and gentle man, sensed Tina’s fear of lizards almost immediately. As someone who loved lizards and snakes, he tried his best to take away Tina’s fear. He explained to her that a herpetologist studies lizards, snakes, turtles, crocodiles, and even frogs. He told her that people jump to conclusions about reptiles without knowing the facts. Tina listened with amazement as he told her about a lizard that could change the color of its skin. Some lizards could even walk on water. Slowly, Tina began to forget her fear of lizards. In fact, she asked Mr. Pamuk if he would show her his pet iguana. Mr. Pamuk was happy to help.

Read this excerpt from "the light of gandhi's lamp" by hilary kromberg inglis, in which she describes driving to the police station where her sister is being detained. to avoid looking at the blackened windows at the top of the building and thinking about the history of who had died or been tortured there, i always looked instead at the little chinese restaurant on the opposite side of the road. how does this passage affect the text? it conveys, with great subtlety, the conflict she felt over having a sister who would break the law and end up in the custody of the police. it conveys, without any implied moral judgment, that those who fought against apartheid considered themselves to be soldiers in a just war. it conveys, with an extended metaphor, the idea that being detained by the police in this society was regarded as a badge of honor. it conveys, with direct language, the view held by many anti-apartheid activists that the police often acted in brutal and unlawful ways.

" "yes." she waited. "i haven't been down to the island because my father believes that you were using me to you stay on malaga island." "well," she said slowly. "well." "i didn't believe it, either." the sea breeze lay at their feet panting, hoping they would play with it again. based on what turner and lizzie say, which is the best conclusion that can be drawn? they are angered by the lies the adults have been spreading. neither of them is able to fully trust what the other is claiming. each trusts the other and cares a great deal about their friendship. both are worried about the troubles their friendship may bring.
