One of the themes throughout literature has been the hero’s journey. You can explore the hero’s journey myths of Jason, Odysseus, Achilles, Perseus, Psyche, Atalanta, and Io. There are similarities and differences between the traditional hero’s journey and the female hero’s journey. Now, it is your turn to put it all together. You will be writing an essay analyzing the hero’s journey in contemporary culture by focusing on the ancient hero Odysseus. In other words, you will be evaluating the impact of the Odysseus’ journey on modern day literature and pop culture. Your essay should answer the following questions: Where do you see the hero’s journey being played out in culture today? What contemporary books, movies and television shows incorporate the elements of the hero’s journey? How does the hero’s journey of Ulysses (Odysseus in the Greek language) in stories today compare to the ancient hero’s journey as found in Bulfinch’s Mythology: “Odyssey” and “Ulysses”? Finally, why do you think the hero’s journey is something that still matters to people today?
