Dexter is disappointed, but he realizes he does not care. He does not feel for Judy as he should. He is a changed man, and the reality that surrounds him has ended his romantic view of life.

"Long ago," he said, "long ago, there was something in me, but now that thing is gone. Now that thing is gone, that thing is gone. I cannot cry. I cannot care. That thing will come back no more."
