With the invention of the telescope, suddenly the universe didn’t seem so far away. Galileo, an Italian scholar in the 1600s, took advantage of this new device by pointing it toward the sky. Through the telescope, the moons and planets looked clearer and closer. Galileo could see that the moon had a rough surface dotted with craters. He also found the Milky Way galaxy. In addition, Galileo observed that Earth appeared to circle the sun instead of the other way around. These discoveries reshaped how people thought about space and Earth’s place in it.
