This is a bit difficult to explain, but I will do my best. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any

I'm not going to give you all the answers to your worksheet, but I will explain a few

Reported Speech is essentially stating what someone said but with out using quotation marks (a direct speech). It won't be exactly what the original person said, but it will be very close. It's important to note the tense of the original quote, because this will change slightly when converting it to reported speech.

For example:

Direct Speech: Lucy stated, "I don't like going to the beach, because the sand gets everywhere"

In reported speech I am telling someone what someone else told me (he said, she said).

Convert to Reported speech: Lucy told (how Lucy was speaking) me that (this is optional) she doesn't (notice that the tense of this verb changes. I will explain this more later) like going to the beach, since the sand gets everywhere.

As I mentioned before, the tense of the verb changes. The verb will be changed to a further past then what it originally was. After all, you are further away from the action then you were when you first heard about it originally!

present simple ---> past simple:

wears ---> wore

past simple ---> past perfect:

gave ---> had given

present continuous ---> past continuous:

looking ---> was looking

present perfect ---> past perfect:

has written ---> had written

Let's look at a few of your questions from your worksheet:

1. "I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a mananda woman." - Arnold

First let's identify who the original speaker is: Arnold

How did Arnold say this? : "I think..." = to think (since this occurred in the past, it will always be in the past tense "thought")

The verb is is and it is in the simple present so we will need to convert it to the simple past: was

Final Product:

Arnold  thought that gay marriage was something that should be between a man and a woman

2. "Traditionally,most ofAustralia's imports come from overseas."- FormerAustralian cabinet ministerKeppel Enderbery

First let's identify who the original speaker is: Keppel Enderbery

How did Keppel say this? : Unlike the first example, Keppel doesn't say how he says this. Usually you would use the in-flexion in verbal speech as a clue, but since this written, not spoken, we will have to use context clues to decide how he would have said this. For the sake of this example I will use "to announce", but "to report", "to say", "to inform", and "to insist" all would work (remember that this will be in past tense announced)

In this case the verb is come

Come is in simple present so we will have to convert it to simple past: came

Final Product:

Keppel Enderbery announced that most of Australia's imports came from over seas

3. "If you take outthe  killings,Washingtonactuallyhasa very lowcrime rate." - Marion Barry,mayor of Washington,D.C.

First let's identify who the original speaker is: Marion Barry

How did Marion say this? : Again, like the second example, Marion doesn't say how she says this. For the sake of this example I will use "to argue" (remember that this will be in past tense argued)

In this case there are several verbs, and we have to convert ALL of them to the same tense: take and has

Both are in simple present so we will have to convert it to simple past: took and had

Final Product:

Marion Barry argued that if we took out the killings, Washington had a very low crime rate.
