Elizabethan Theatre Because there was no roof, the part of the audience would get wet if it rained. They were however able to lean on the stage if they were at the front. The stage directions gave information about the props needed , such as to show it was set at night. As there was very little stage design the actors also had to describe the setting for the audience. Stage entrances were and but not usually from the wings like today. The actors had to get used to having the audience on sides of them, all very close and intimate!
