What is the meaning of the word welfare based on the context of the passage?
Overcoming Fears
Calvin was afraid of monsters under his bed. So, he called out to his father to check for them before going off to sleep. Calvin's father checked under the bed and the table and inside the closet. He assured Calvin that all was clear and promised to stay with him until he felt safe. At Calvin's request, his father chose a bedtime story and read it aloud to Calvin. As Calvin listened, he wished to be braver. The prince in the story restored peace to his kingdom by fighting off invaders and dragons. Just like the prince in the story, he wished to perform heroic deeds for the welfare of his friends and family. Right before his father stepped out of the room, Calvin spoke up, “Dad, tomorrow night I’ll check under the bed for monsters. I want to be brave.” His father smiled at him, ruffled his hair, and said, “Of course, son."
