January 30 seems like it was a bad day for Anne Frank, because she complained about her poor treatment by her parents all throughout

She says, "I couldn't bear their sympathy or their good-humored  derision," which is a good portrayal of this "golden mean" idea: she doesn't want their kindness (sympathy) or their antipathy (derision). She wants to show them all the contempt inside of her, but she'll settle for the golden mean instead.
