In Chapter 26, Scout's teacher, Miss Gates, tells the class, “That's the difference between America and
Germany... Over here we don't believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are
prejudiced." Scout is confused by her teacher's obvious hypocrisy: there are many prejudiced people in
Maycomb who do persecute others.
