Guy de Maupassant was a French writer and poet, his works used to treat characters with strong traits of humanity and for that reason they could present dubious attitudes that could make the reader consider them bad people. This is because Guy de Maupassant used to deal with psychological and social issues in his narratives, which profoundly influenced the characters' behavior.

In general, we can consider that the characters he created were good people, but his psychological conditions and society could shape flaws and defects in these characters. Some characters had more flaws than qualities, makes the reader have a different perception between them, but all show good people, who can be corrupted, or not, by the circumstances in which they live.
