Both talk of those who have died: the Address speaks of the soldiers who lost their lives fighting for their country, for the audience even; the poem talks of Lincoln's death, of how he was never able to see the end of the war and the victory so much wished for. Both excerpts inspire sadness and reverence in the audience. They evoke respect for those people's deaths. They somehow tell us to honor their memory by living up to their ideals and purposes.
