After reading Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” and watching the video, please answer the following questions thoroughly, using complete sentences. I want you to express your own ideas and to then support those ideas with the text. Be thorough!
Reread the first and second paragraphs and write down three words that stand out to you about the setting.
How would you describe the relationship between the main character and the wolf over the course of the story? How do they seem to feel about each other? Provide examples from the text.
In the video, I discussed the themes of perseverance and pride. By the end of the story, the unnamed main character dies. Why do you think he didn’t take the cold seriously (until it was too late)? How did pride and perseverance play a role in his death?
The main character says the old man that advised him not to travel alone in the cold was like a woman. What quality or qualities does the old man have that the main character views as unmanly? Why do you think he views that quality as womanly?
What is the lesson to be learned from “To Build a Fire”?
Do you think the unnamed main character qualifies as a tragic hero? Why or why not? Don’t forget to give me examples from the text!
I mentioned that the original story published in 1902 had a happy ending. Why do you think readers prefer the “sad” version?
How did you feel about the ending? Be specific.
