In this story the Puerto Rican writer, Jesús Colon, describes his awareness of stereotypes that influences his decision-making. For him it is obvious that the young white woman could use some help with her two children, a baby and a suitcase, alone, and past midnight. Nevertheless, the writer fears what could be her impulsive reaction when confronted with help offered by a black man. So maybe it is not so much her problem - she got in the subway with everything so she can get out of it as well - but more the mental problem the writer has.
