The author in the opening of the essay uses lines 1-14 to build a foundation for her argument against nature as perceived by people generally. People usually perceive nature as something beautiful, something to be appreciated, protected, and preserved.

Joyce takes the leftist position with the lines that specifically indicate how negative nature is.
