Indeed, the president, who loved trees almost as if they were his own children, put the power of his office behind the Shelterbelt Project. The government would pay farmers to allow the planting of 220 million trees on their land in a 100-mile-wide "shelterbelt" stretching from the Canadian border to the Texas Panhandle. . . .
