Read this excerpt from “Collision Course.”

Mama thought some of the kids roughhoused too much, and she complained about why did she come to the United States and work in a hair salon, washing old ladies’ heads and trying to make their hair look thicker, if I wasn’t going to get the best education possible and become president. OK, maybe not president, but at least an attorney. Or a mathematician. She would settle for engineer. On and on it went. What her life had been like, how difficult, the lines, the lack of stuff in stores, people living uneasily with the government. I was supposed to have it all, and in her mind that meant a nice quiet suburban town in California.
