The leather back turtle is a much beloved Malaysian heritage. Sadly, it is also one of the many endangered

know more about these gentle giants and fight to (03) them. Most of us have scant knowledge
about these creatures other than they are (04) off the coasts of Kelantan and Terengganu, and
that they resemble tortoises.
Turtles are (05) that spend most of their lives in the sea. They (06) air and
reproduce by laying eggs on land. The female turtle makes its way onto the beach and (07) a hole
in which she lays eggs. Apart from sea snakes, turtles are the only remaining marine reptile today. Turtles have not
changed much in the evolutionary (08) of reptiles and still look very much like their ancestors.
It is not known how long a leatherback can live but it is believed to be a great age of more than a hundred years, if
undisturbed by human. They eat mainly jellyfish and the macroplankton (09) in their tentacles, and
other miniscule invertebrates found in the ocean.
Despite the ever-growing threat of extinction, there is still hope that the leatherback and other turtles will survive and
thrive well into the next millennium. These mysterious, lonely giants of the sea remind us of the richness and complexity of nature’s creations. The turtle is indeed a (10) of survival and longevity.
