Identifying the Claim in an Argument
Which statement best states the claim of this
passage?
Read the passage and choose the best answer to the
question
When people want a new dog, they should go to an
animal shelter and adopt a dog that's been abandoned.
The Humane Society of Central Texas says that about 3.9
million dogs are in animal shelters each year and 1.2
million of them will be put to death because no one
adopts them. If someone truly loves animals, they should
save shelter pets' lives instead of paying big money to
adopt a purebred dog that will probably have more health
issues than the typical shelter dog. Shelter dogs are also
neutered, so they cannot have puppies. That reduces the
number of unwanted dogs in the future.
People who want a dog should adopt a shelter dog.
About 3.9 million dogs end up in shelters each year.
Adopting shelter dogs saves lives.
About 1.2 million shelter dogs could die if they are
not adopted
