Although the cage crinoline was awkward and caused damages to objects when women knocked them as they walked through, these remained popular for a long time. These skirts sometimes spanned over six feet and made walking through the doors challenging. Today, crinolines are usually a part of a formal outfit, such as an evening gown or a wedding dress. Instead of metal, the hoops are made of plastic or nylon. Modern crinolines are much more lightweight and flexible.
