The Odyssey is an epic poem that tells a story of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his journey home after the Trojan War.

Odysseus truly possesses qualities of an epic hero. He is undeniably strong and courageous, but it is his superhuman intelligence that helps him in the most difficult of situations. For instance, he has his companions tie him up when they encounter the sirens, so that he cannot be charmed by their singing. This power of intelligence over physical strength is one of the main themes present in this poem.

As every hero, Odysseus is charged with a quest - to return home from the war, in this case. He has enemies - mythical creatures that prevent him from safely returning home, as well as Poseidon.

Another trait that makes Odysseus a hero is his tragic flaw - hubris, or excessive pride.

These qualities all constitute the theme of the story. It is because of his qualities as a hero that Odysseus faces certain obstacles and finds himself in certain situations.
