Read the passage carefully. Cell phone use in schools is an issue. Even though 82 percent of the parents of middle-schoolers wish their children did not have cell phones in class, 55 percent of schools allow them. Eliminating cell phones from the classroom will improve students’ academic success and their ability to stay focused. Cell phone use in school can lead to poor grades. A study of 118 college students permitted half of them to use phones, tablets, or other devices in class. The other half did not use them. The half that used electronic devices in class scored at least 5 percentage points lower than their peers on their final exam. That’s half a letter-grade difference. Middle schoolers would probably be affected even more. Too much cell phone use can also lead to attention problems. Data show that middle schoolers with higher cell phone use have trouble paying attention. They may be tempted to look at social media when they should be doing school work. Choose the sentence that best answers each question. What is the author’s claim? What is one reason the author offers to explain the claim? What is one piece of evidence the author offers in support of the reasons for the claim?
