Although Nick asserts that Gatsby “represented everything for which [he had] an unaffected scorn” (6) at the beginning of the novel, he also states in the same passage that Gatsby possessed ”an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again” (6). As the novel progresses, the character of Gatsby is both fantastically mysterious and yet marvelously human. Some would argue that he is a tragic hero, citing his flaw as a determination to recover that which is unrecoverable – the past. But what of his morals and motivations? Why does Nick consider Gatsby “great?” How does Nick’s perspective on Gatsby relate to Fitzgerald’s intention for his readers? Write an elegant analysis of the character of Jay Gatsby and why he is central to the themes of the novel
