Read the excerpt from "Opening Ceremonies of the New
York and Brooklyn Bridge" by Hon. Seth Low, Mayor of the
City of Brooklyn
Which of the following best summarizes the central idea of
this excerpt?
In the course of the construction of the Bridge a number of
lives have been lost. Does it not sometimes seem as
though every work of enduring value, in the material as in
the moral world, must needs be purchased at the cost of
human life? Let us recall with kindness at this hour the
work of those who labored here faithfully unto the death, no
less than of that great army of men who have wrought,
year in and year out, to execute the great design. Let us
give our meed of praise to-day to the humblest workman
who has here done his duty well, no less than to the great
engineer who told him what to do.
O The mayor gently lectures on the importance of
speaking kindly about those who have died.
O The mayor commemorates and gives praise to those
who were killed while building the bridge.
Low gives a monotonous explanation of the costs of the
materials that were purchased for the bridge.
O Low remembers those humble men who labored
intensely and faithfully to execute this dream.

Multiple ! in this excerpt from act i, scene vi, of macbeth, duncan praises the atmosphere in the castle and the hospitality of his hostess. identify two reasons that these comments are ironic. duncan: this castle hath a pleasant seat: the air nimbly and sweetly recommends itself unto our gentle sense. . . (enter lady macbeth.) duncan: see, see, our honour'd hostess! ā€” the love that follows us sometime is our trouble, which still we as love. herein i teach you how you shall bid god ild us for your pains, and us for your trouble. he will meet his death in the castle, which he considers a pleasant place. his praise for inverness and his hostess, lady macbeth, is deceptive. duncan secretly plans to give macbeth's title to donalbain. the hostess he praises is actually plotting his murder.

Read the passage from a raisin in the sun. mama: lord have mercy, baby. you done gone and bought your grandmother a hat? travis (very proud): open it! she does and lifts out an elaborate, but very elaborate, wide gardening hat, and all the adults break up at the sight of it. ruth: travis, honey, what is that? travis (who thinks it is beautiful and appropriate): it's a gardening hat! like the ladies always have on in the magazines when they work in their gardens. beneatha (giggling fiercely): travisā€”we were trying to make mama mrs. miniverā€”not scarlett o'hara! mama (indignantly): what's the matter with you all! this here is a beautiful hat!
