On April 19, 1775, a group of American farmers serving as Minute Men began the American
Revolution when they fired at the British at Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. Some
decades later, Ralph Waldo Emerson called the first shot of the Revolution "the shot heard
round the world." Emerson used the phrase in his "Concord Hymn," which was sung on April
19, 1836, at the unveiling of a monument honoring the Minute Men's stand.
