OMG HELP ME
How do the writers portray their Arctic experiences in Captain Scott's Diary and 'I Fell Through Arctic Ice'?
The skills being tested here are as follows:
- your ability to make perceptive comparisons
- the use of appropriate quotations to support your points
- the analysis of the methods the writers use - how do they communicate their message?
Begin by brainstorming the similarities and differences between the texts and then proceed to write your response.
You may wish to consider some of the following points:
-Scott's writing consists of extracts from his diary. He was aware that the document may be read by others as it had become historically important. Rolfe, in contrast, is writing a newspaper article.
-Scott is recording things as they occur: Rolfe is writing after the event
-Scott's writing varies massively in style; the entries immediately before his death are terse and factual whilst the opening section is almost poetic in style
- consider Scott's use of figurative language in the Impressions section of his writing; what use does he make of sensory imagery, onomatopoeia, personification and simile? Why do you think that he chooses to include such an impressionistic section in his writing?
-consider Scott's use of litotes (which is deliberate understatement, the opposite of hyperbole). Why does he downplay the significance of certain things?
-in contrast, how does Rolfe make use of similes and rhetorical questions to convey the full horror of his situation?
-consider the vocabulary choices of both writers. For example, Scott's use of 'seductive ', 'fragrant', 'gentle' and 'peeping' and Rolfe's use of 'oblivion', 'bludgeon', savage', 'distorted' and 'gnarled'.
- what, ultimately, does each man want to communicate?
You must write a minimum of three paragraphs
