Who were the workers?

Due to the rapid growth of businesses and factories, many workers and labors were hired by the employers at a very low wage. Male, female and even children were the workers.

What kind of works did they do?

There were both skilled and unskilled workers who worked twelve to fourteen hours per day and also worked for six days a week.

Where did they live and work?

The skilled ones were however, allowed to get back home and rest for a while but most of the unskilled ones had to live in the factories and had terrible lives.

What were their living and working conditions?

The factories had sunlight to be the only source of light. They had small windows form which minimum sunlight could enter. But there were big machines. Therefore, accidents became very common during the working hours. Children only received 10 cents and were getting sick due to lack of exercise and sunlight.

Why did they accept these jobs?

Employment had become very tough at that time. It became hard for people to arrange two-times meal even. So, they accepted working till the time they got the wages. Rather, they could cross any limit just to earn the minimum amount.

Why didn't factory owners treat their workers well?

The owners were only concerned about earning more and more profit. Therefore, they paid the workers very less. They also made them work day and night and gave just two breaks for lunch and dinner.
