If you had the opportunity to partake in community service, would you? Perhaps you decide to volunteer in your community, what organization would you be willing to donate your time to? There are many non-profit organizations in need of volunteer’s year round so it was quite difficult to narrow it down to only one.

The organization that I’d like to donate my time and efforts to would be the Portland Guinea Pig Rescue. They are a non-profit organization whose volunteers specialize in educating the public about cavies. They rehabilitate and rehome guinea pigs in need, and work with owners on solutions to enable them to keep their existing guinea pigs. All over Oregon there’s a tremendous amount of guinea pigs that are in need of loving and caring homes. Along with guinea pig owners who are severely undereducated when it comes to cavies and how to care for them. Guinea pigs are extremely loving animals, but they require a lot of care and attention. I myself have three amazing cavies and I take educating myself about cavies as well as their care very seriously.

My overall goal for volunteering at this specific non-profit organization would be to educate the public about cavies, also to rehabilitate and care for cavies in need. I hope to make a difference in the community through expanding their knowledge and perception on guinea pigs, and the resources needed to properly care for them. I imagine I would have responsibilities like cleaning the guinea pig cages, feeding the cavies, educating the public about proper guinea pig care, and spending time with the cavies so they can get the attention they need. I realize I won’t be able to help every guinea pig in Oregon, yet I would also be accomplishing a lot just by educating and rehabilitating in the Portland metro area!

Guinea pigs are a very lovable species and are amazing companions. As long as you care for them correctly as well as understanding there’s a huge commitment when you decide to care for guinea pigs. That is why I’d want to volunteer at the Portland Guinea Pig Rescue. I want to be able to give cavies a chance at the life they deserve.
