The Hollywood babe of legend is viewed today as the blueprint of what a leading man in television and films should aspire to be. However, James Dean began his career at the bottom just like every other star in Hollywood. Dean was born in Marion, Indiana, and spent his early years as a star athlete, good student, and public speaking competitor. He moved to California after graduating high school to pursue a degree in pre-law, but a transfer to UCLA and a shift to studying drama gave Dean the acting bug. His steely resolve led to his first acting role in a college production as Malcolm in MacBeth.

Dean didn't become a star overnight. His early work included minor walk-on roles and commercials, but landing the big breakout role he wanted proved elusive. Hollywood wasn't producing the acting jobs Dean wanted, so he moved to New York City and began to find steady work on various television shows. It wasn't until he landed the role of Cal Trask in East of Eden that stardom quickly found Dean. His hardened good looks and ability to convey complex emotions gave him an edge over others pursuing the role.

The role led to Dean's first Academy Award nomination. Leading parts in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant soon followed, as did more acting accolades. However, an unfortunate automobile accident cut Dean's promising career short. Yet his talents and charms still remain trademarks of the best leading men in television and film today.
