One in four children class playing video
games as "exercise", survey finds
23 per cent of young people surveyed
viewed playing video games as a form
of exercise raising fears that young
people are becoming "hostages to
handheld devices":
30 "technology plays heavily in the lives of
young people" this fondness for gadgets
should not be taken as a sign of young
people's closed-mindedness to other forms
of social activity."
One in four British children believe that
playing video games is a form of exercise
according to a new report which warns that
sport in schools is at a "critical crossroads".
35 The report concludes: "There is no resisting
the march of technology. Policymakers can
feel nostalgic for a time before the challenges
new connected technologies have brought in
engaging young people, or they can harness
40 these technologies to their advantage."
10 Youth Sport Trust, a national charity which
promotes physical education and sport,
warned that young people risk becoming
"hostages to handheld devices" after
surveying 1,000 children aged between five
15 and 16.
The survey found that while three quarters
of children say they enjoy PE lessons and 40
per cent want to play more sport, 23 per
cent of children thought that "playing a type
20 of computer game with friends is a type of
exercise.
"In order to get children active from a
young age, a more holistic approach* to PE
is needed, one which integrates technology
and the delivery of a seamless, intuitive and
45 digitally enhanced form of physical activity."
Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth
'Sport Trust who has worked in education
and sports development for 20 years, said:
"I think that we're starting to see changes in
50 the way that primary schools are looking at
and thinking about PE and sport, to see it
much more as part of the holistic education
of the child rather than a kind of bolt on,
extra-curricular programme which I think.
55 if the investment continues, probably in
the next two to four years, we will see an
increase in participation in primary schools
as a result."
The survey forms part of a study called "The
Class of 2035", which warns that PE lessons
in schools are crucial in order "to avoid a
25 physically and socially disengaged future
generation, over dependent on technology."
It is suggested that schools should look
for ways to incorporate technology into
sports lessons and explains that although

Drag each label to the correct location. each label can be used more than once. based on this excerpt from f. scott fitzgerald's "bernice bobs her hair," match each character with the type of character element he or she represents. "you may as well stop making a fool of yourself over warren mcintyre. he doesn't care a snap of his fingers about you." for a tense moment they regarded each other—marjorie scornful, aloof; bernice astounded, half-angry, half-afraid. then two cars drove up in front of the house and there was a riotous honking. both of them gasped faintly, turned, and side by side hurried out. all through the bridge party bernice strove in vain to master arising uneasiness. she had offended marjorie, the sphinx of sphinxes. with the most wholesome and innocent intentions in the world she had stolen marjorie's property. she felt suddenly and horribly guilty. after the bridge game, when they sat in an informal circle and the conversation became general, the storm gradually broke. little otis ormonde inadvertently precipitated it. "when you going back to kindergarten, otis? " some one had asked. "me? day bernice gets her hair bobbed." "then your education's over," said marjorie quickly. "that's only a bluff of hers. i should think you'd have realized." "that a fact? " demanded otis, giving bernice a reproachful glance. "there's a lot of bluffs in the world," continued marjorie quite pleasantly. "i should think you'd be young enough to know that, otis." "well," said otis, "maybe so. but gee! with a line like bernice's—" "really? " yawned marjorie. "what's her latest bon mot? " no one seemed to know. in fact, bernice, having trifled with her muse's beau, had said nothing memorable of late. "was that really all a line? " asked roberta curiously. bernice hesitated. she felt that wit in some form was demanded of her, but under her cousin's suddenly frigid eyes she was completely incapacitated.

Read the excerpt from martin luther king jr.’s "i have a dream” speech. and so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of new hampshire. let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of new york. let freedom ring from the heightening alleghenies of pennsylvania. let freedom ring from the snow-capped rockies of colorado. let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of california. but not only that: let freedom ring from stone mountain of georgia. let freedom ring from lookout mountain of tennessee. let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of mississippi. from every mountainside, let freedom ring. the most likely reason king uses allusions in this part of his speech is to share his knowledge of american geography. compare northern and southern destinations. remind listeners about small-town accountability. encourage listeners to envision freedom everywhere.

Read the excerpt from the common sense of bicycling: bicycling for ladies. the bicycle is capable of such high speed that there is a strong temptation to ride so fast as to cause over exertion or excessive perspiration. on the other hand some people ride too slow, causing a zigzag and uncertain movement. while exercising reasonable caution, be a fearless rider. when you come to a steep hill, if the road is clear, let it go as fast as it will. if you rid yourself of that ghost of fear, coasting is one of the greatest delights of cycling. which is the best paraphrase of the text?
