Meursault was upset with the chaplain's visit for it was a plan to try to change his belief, to make him turn to God.

He concluded that "felt ready to start life all over  again. It was as if that great rush of anger had washed me clean, emptied me of hope and, gazing up at the dark sky spangled with its signs and stars, for the first time, the  first, I laid my heart open to the benign indifference of the universe".

Albert Camus' novel on existentialism "The Stranger" tells the story of Meursault who was and convicted for killing a man. He was later beheaded, but never did he waver in his belief of human existentialism rather than belief in God.  

Meursault was imprisoned for killing a man. He was sentenced to be beheaded, and had been waiting for his final day when the chaplain, as was customary, came to visit him for the last time. Even though he find it hard to accept his fate, he did nonetheless hold his belief that human existence is just a mere formality and that death is evident for everyone.  

Presented as someone who hardly have 'normal' human emotions, he was accused of premeditating the killing. The proofs brought against him were his 'unusual' behavior during his mother's funeral, not crying when he was in grief. Then, Marie also brought the topic of their date just days after the funeral, watching a comedic movie, thus bringing the trial to his character and not to the main reason he was accused- the murder case. He was then put to be a monster, refusing to acknowledge his remorse for the crime he had committed.  

The chaplain's visit was a move to try to convert his atheism, to make him turn to God before he dies but this only enraged him. He declares that he will hang on to his belief of a purely physical world. He then fully accepts that human existence holds no greater value than anything else. Contented with his fate, he calmly accepts the death that awaits him, proclaiming that he "laid my heart open to the benign indifference of the universe".
