Materials
you may need to have access to a library or the internet as you conduct your research. you'll also need a copy of your thesis statement and the outline that you put together in a previous project.

instructions
go through each of the claims that you make in your outline. ask yourself, "what will prove this? " create a worksheet like the one below. remember that it is your goal to find research that will allow you to make appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos.

thesis statement:

claim #1:

sub-claim #1:
proof:
sub-claim #2:
proof:
sub-claim #3:
proof:
claim #2:

sub-claim #1:

sub-claim #2:
proof:
sub-claim #3:
proof:
claim #3:

sub-claim #1 :
proof :
sub-claim #2 :
proof :
sub-claim #3:
proof:
once you've made a list of what would be adequate proof for each claim, jot down where you might find information that adds to the proof you already have. once you've done that, it's time to go to the library, go on-line, or head to the "field" to conduct your survey or interview.

remember to document your sources according to mla format (click here to view the mla style guide).

note-taking
once you've located your source, it's time to begin taking notes. you are not required to use note cards. alternatives include notebook paper, your computer (including the essay box below), or a worksheet. record the core elements you need for correct documentation of your sources (refer to the mla style guide for details about each of the elements). format for notes on each source should look something like the following:

title of source:
author:
title of container:
other contributors (if any):
version (if applicable):
publisher:
publication date:
location (page numbers for print source, url for online source):
