How does poe use a narrative structure to create the meaning and effects in the raven

The Raven is a narrative poem, as it has a clear plot (story told by a narrator), is written in metered verse, and includes poetic techniques (alliteration and repetition). The narrative structure used in the poem contributes to the establishment of ominous atmosphere.

Explanation:

The speaker is dealing with recent death of his loved Lenore. On a cold December evening, he is visited by a quite unusual guest - a raven that repeats the word 'nevermore'.

As far as the meter is concerned, there are sixteen syllables in the first and third lines, which means that there are eight pairs of syllables. This type of meter is called trochaic octameter.

From the beginning of the poem, the narrator uses alliteration which increases the tension. Alliteration is a literary device which involves repetition of a particular sound, in a sequence of words that are close to one another. It can be seen in the very first line of the poem:

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.

Poe also uses repetition, which contributes to the dark atmosphere even more. The fact that the raven repeats only one word -  'nevermore', makes the speaker even more depressed and frightened. The speaker asks if this is a sign from the angels that he will end up in heaven with his Lenore, but the raven only utters 'nevermore'.

'Nevermore' appears to be the answer to every question that the speaker asks, and thus becomes a symbol of death.
