Summarize machiavelli’s account of “whether it is better [for an effective prince] to be loved than feared, or the reverse.” explain his general conclusion that “one would like to be both the one and the other; but because it is so difficult to combine them, it is far better to be feared than loved if you cannot be both.” why is this so difficult? if cruelty (more than anything else) evokes fear in the populace (the prince’s subjects) and compassion elicits love, why must the prince “want to have a reputation for compassion rather than for cruelty,” yet nonetheless “be careful that he does not make bad use of compassion,” and be ready whenever necessary to “use cruelty well”? what is it about human nature that makes a certain degree of cruelty practically unavoidable (especially for a “new prince”)? why is being feared more under a prince’s “control” than being loved ever could be?
