question 33
a student is writing a research paper for his class about sloths. the student wants to revise the draft to include a thesis sentence. read the draft of the research paper and complete the task that follows.
sloths

sloths seldom climb down from the treetops where they live because they cannot walk. sloths actually have to use their arms to drag their body across the ground if they need to move. because their eyesight and hearing senses are not strong, these unique mammals depend on their sense of touch to find food. sloths do not have hands, rather they have four feet with clawed toes. some sloths have two toes on each limb while others have three toes. their body temperature is very low ranging between 77°f and 95°f. green algae often grows on their thick skin. sloths move very slowly, clinging to the branches of trees where they eat leaves with their stubby teeth. food can take a week to digest in their chambered stomach, which remains almost full. eating only leaves does not provide very much nutrition for energetic movement. sloths spend less than three hours a day being active with their slow movements. sloths may appear to be slow and tired creatures, but that is just the way their bodies work.

Read sentence 13 from the draft. some plants retain a great deal of their foliage through much of the spring and summer, but the leaves do not retain their green color for long. which detail would be best to add after sentence 13 to develop the topic? a. since the green color of the leaves that are bright and abundant during the warmer months will disappear by the time it is fall, it is important that the leaves are trimmed and kept freshly cut so that they will last for as long as possible. b. while the temperature outside may dictate when the fall colors of leaves appear, it is only one of many environmental factors that play a part in the changing of colors from green leaves to fall-colored leaves during the cooler months. c. if people want to enjoy the green color of leaves longer, trees should be planted where the environment is warmer and the days longer because chlorophyll in the leaves can only be manufactured and replaced with sunlight and warmth. d. the green chlorophyll normally masks the fall-colored pigments during the warmer months, but as sunlight becomes less abundant and trees become frozen, the fall colors of leaves become more visible as chlorophyll disappears.
