This clever reply made sure that Polyphemus won't be able to know his true identity. This is evident in the next scene where Polyphemus was asked by the other Cyclops what ails him. He replied that Nobody had fooled him which made the others think that he had gone mad for he said nobody is responsible for his ailment, where he had meant the person "Nobody/ Odysseus" and not nobody.
