This is one of the most well-known phrases of the philosopher Socrates. Socrates was a Greek philosopher who is credited with the development of the Socratic method. Most of the information we have of Socrates comes through the work of his student, Plato.

In this phrase, Socrates conveys the idea that the only right way to be is to live like a philosopher. This means living your life purposefully, constantly questioning your ideas and prejudices and honestly examining who you are and who you want to be. The idea of the "examination of life" means living life in a decisive way. Socrates does not think it is a good idea to let "life past you by." Instead, you should pay attention to each moment and act in a way that fits with your ideas and your goals. On the other hand, when he talks about a life that is "worth living, " Socrates implies that lives that are not examined are not really considered to have been lived, as they were not actively chosen by the person in question.
