friendships in life and in novels
“ feeling of friendship from the start, is that special feeling in your heart, a feeling from deep down inside, a feeling that no one should hide, a friend is there through good and bad, they make you happy when you're sad, they brighten up your darkest day, just by the simple things they say…” william s. tsoukalas. this quote describes ashley and my relationship almost perfectly. like the quote, a friend should be someone that brightens up your day and is with you through the good and the bad. ashley is my best friend. i tell her everything and i think it is important in a friendship that you are able to trust and rely on each other. many times ashley has been there for me and i have been able to rely on her when i needed it. our relationship is a bit like george and lennie in some aspects, seeing as she is like the more grown-up one while i’m always acting more childish. in friendships, it is important to be able to trust and rely on each other throughout everything you go through. john stienbecks of mice and men exhibits trust and reliability almost exactly how my life does.
ashley and i both rely upon and support each other when we need it and are able to trust each other wholeheartedly. on one occasion i was in a situation where i really needed a friend, i was able to contact her immediately and get my mind off the situation. ashley is pretty great at me forget about my problems and telling me to calm down when i get too nervous. even though she may not know it, i feel like she is my closest ally and confidant. it's pretty much a given that if something happens to me she is going to be the first one to hear about it. there has only been one time where i kept something from her and i hated every single moment of it. i finally told her and i was so relieved by her answer. i made a promise to myself to never do that again because i know now that i can go to her with any of my problems and she will me through them.
lennie small knew that he could trust george with anything. from taking a dead mouse to killing a woman, lennie always ended up telling his best friend the truth. as the novel progressed the bond between george and lennie seemingly grew. one example of lennie trusting george is when lennie accidentally killed the puppy and curley’s wife. at first, he was terrified and tried to hide what he did, but then remembered that george was always going to be there for him so he went to the hiding spot that george had informed him of before. lennie trusted george at that time also he showed his trust in george when the rabbit told him that george was going to leave him and he states, “he won’t… he won’t do nothing like that. i know george. me an’ him travels together.”(102) lennie was almost right about george even though it was george that wound up shooting him in the end. lennie was so trusting of george that he would do anything george asked of him. their willingness to trust each other is shown throughout the book.
lennie and george's relationship is quite like the relationship ashley and i have. i would do just about anything she asked of me because i know that i will always be able to trust her one hundred percent of the time. lennie, george, ashley, and i all show these characteristics and without them, i wonder what kind of bond we would have. a friend is there for you through good and bad as william s. tsoukalas writes. relationships are built upon solid principles such as trust and reliability. to branch off of that, how possible is it to have a good friendship without trust and reliability.
