excerpt from the first tears — based on an inuit folktale

5 amak became exasperated as he watched the seals swim away into the dark water. however, amak’s spirits rose when he saw a lone seal sitting alone near the edge of the water. sure that the seal did not see him, he advanced stealthily and stayed as quiet as possible. at the last moment, and with a burst of energy, amak sprang toward the remaining seal; however, he was too late, as the animal jumped into the water to join the rest. he collapsed onto the ground in sorrow. as amak got up, he felt a feeling he did not recognize. water started running down the sides of amak’s face. he touched the warm water and tasted it. it was as salty as the ocean flowing in front of him. amak felt himself making strange noises and choking as the water flowed from his eyes.

6 amak's wife and son heard the strange noises and came to find him. when they finally caught sight of him, he still had water pouring from his eyes. his wife and child were very afraid because they did not understand. after amak told the story of the seals and how they eluded his grasp, water began to flow from his wife’s and son’s eyes, too. amak and his family wept because of the seals. that is how people learned to cry.
in the sixth paragraph the word eluded means

everyday, people all over the world are making sacrifices; all for different reasons. some people may choose to do more simple sacrifices, like, "my daughter is receiving an award at school, but i also have an appointment, so i will decide to cancel that appointment to be there with my daughter" although she is cancelling her appointment, she can easily reschedule it, and spend her time with nore important thungs in life: being there with her daughter. this will make her daughter happy too because she is recieveing an award for her hard work, and it brings us happiness when our hard work is noticed and appreciated.

on the other hand, some people dont know when to make a sacrifice, ir bow to make one. well, making a sacrifice is when you do something for someone else other than yourself, for someone else's happiness, not so you can gain something in return. you do it for them, not for you. so, anyone can make a sacrifice, even the most simplest ones, like giving up the tv for a sibling or a sibling with homework, when you could be doing something else. the point is to others, when you can be doing something else. you do it out of the fact that you want to them, not so that it can benefit you.

making sacrifices benefit people in many ways, it can bring a smile to there face knowing someone is willing to and bring kindess. alot of people tend to feel unwanted and that no one is there for them, but if we show kindess and sacrifice the less importnat things in life for the most important things in life, people will once again feel happiness and more at ease knowing that someone is or was there for them, even if it be only once.

"everyday

use" was written by alice walker. this is a story about two sisters, dee

and maggie wanting to have the handmade quilt. maggie wants to use the thing

for its purpose, while dee appreciates it for being “her heritage”.   the quilt represents family heritage. it was

believed that only dedication and years of hard work can represent a  quilt. 

mama decided to give

the quilts to her less fortunate daughter, maggie because she believed that dee

could not hold the true meaning of their family heritage and   that she would not use the quilts for their

purpose. however, dee believed that maggie can’t appreciate the quilts just as

how she sees them, and she thought that the quilt will be put to “everyday use”

by maggie and within 5 years or so, the quilt will turn into a rag. in the story, dee strongly believed that maggie do not deserve the quilts.
