Slaves were deprived of having a family, an education, a set of rights, in short they were kept in complete ignorance. On the other hand, slaveholders perceived the slaves’ need to break free, so they must use excessive force to keep them under control. That is why they are considered inhuman, who in their right mind would separate a mother from her child? Who would beat someone to death? Who would underfeed another human being actually under their own care? Who would hold someone working for them against their will? Only a heartless inhuman being would…and that is Douglass point of view.
