i would say it is like building a house from the foundation up.   you start with an outline to get the basic ideas of what you want to say down (floor, walls, etc.) then you fill in the details whether that be with facts for non-fiction or imagination for fiction. (furniture, curtains, carpet, etc.)   when you edit you are doing you're final clean up before it is ready to move in (turn in).
