For 1.05 i would recommend "story of an hour" and sojourner truth's "ain't i a woman? " because the historical
connection for both is similar and easy.
if you go with chopin and truth, for both readings consider what is going on in the country in the 1850's. how
does chopin's main character react to her husband's death? why does that reflect how women felt about their
position in the household or society during that time? the same goes for truth--you should find her reading very
straight-forward. : )
then, find some support for each and connect the quotes to your thoughts about democracy or the social structure
of that time period.
if you opt for twain, you're going to have to do some outside research to make the historical connections in your
analysis. how does he use "local colour" and what social commentary does his story include? what does it say
about the way americans are known for telling stories?
in "o captain! my captain" or "the martyr," how might these poems relate to the death of abraham lincoln?
