A thesaurus is similar to a dictionary. It lists words for reference. Nevertheless, words in a thesaurus are grouped together based on similarity of meaning. It is a useful tool to turn to when writing since it contains  synonyms for words and therefore enrich our vocabulary  preventing us from being repetitive.
