love leads to strength: literary analysis of children of blood and bone

she always brought trouble – even when she tries to save her village. in tomi adeyemi’s book, the children of blood and bone, zeilie caused lots of diviners to lose their lives, while trying to empower them. her love for her people gave her the strength she needed to do the unthinkable to save them. the author reveals the theme that love leads to strength, as shown through the characterization of inan and amari, but also through the plot twist of king and baba’s deaths.

in the book, children of blood and bone, inan and amari lived in a royal family. they loved each other dearly. amari, a princess, was naive inan, a future king, was disingenuous. their father was arrogant, he forced them to do things they didn’t want to do. for example, amari, sweet and innocent, was forced to fight by her father, “i said, strike! ” his yells were described by inan as “thunder." amari couldn’t fight, she “shook her head and let her sword fall," inan on the other hand, did the opposite and followed his father's commands. their father tried to force them to fight with real swords to make them stronger because of his first family that was “coddled” and killed. amari was considered weak; she was only a princess. inan should pick the kingdom of orisha, over his sister. the flashback of his sisters bloodied back, and her screams haunt him though. he knew he had to protect her over orisha. although their father was controlling, the princess could no longer allow him to do so, the love for her brother gave her the courage to fight. “strike, amari. fight! ” she repeats to herself in her head, “i am not the little girl he knows. i am a princess. a queen. i am the lionaire.” amari kills her father that put a sword in her brother, inan. she calls herself a lionare, the title she earned in ibeji. she is no longer weak, she didn’t drop the sword, she stood up to her father to protect her brother from being killed. as you can see, the love for amari’s brother, inan, gave her the strength to kill her father, king saran.

another example was the death of baba. he was the father of zeilie and tzain, they only had each other. their mother was killed by king saran. zeilie was chosen by the gods to bring back magic, but she faces many obstacles that were burdensome. for example, zeilie and tzain were forced to leave baba. he left them with memorable words from their mother. “your she loved you fiercely. she would be so proud right now.” he also told his son, “i’m proud of you, son. no matter what. i’ll always be proud.” they had to leave because inan came and created a catastrophe at their village. he was killing diviners, including kids. tzain protected amari and zeilie as they traveled to bring back magic. when they were so close, there was baba. i move to shield baba, but it’s too late. the arrowhead pierces my father’s chest. his blood leaks onto the ground, baba was killed. this awoken something in zeilie as she says, “more death. more blood. the blackest part of my rage finally has the power it’s always craved, the chance to avenge mama. now baba. i’ll take these shadows of death and end them." zeilie and tzain were forced to up everything they required to bring back magic for their father to remain alive. at least, that was what the soldiers said. the death of baba awoken something in zeilie. the power she thought was gone, came back from the spirits of their gods. the spirits gave her the incantation which nearly kills her as she brings back magic. the spirits were her mother. zeilie’s love for her father unleashed her magic and her bring back magic to save the remaining village.

as we can see, in children of blood and bone, the theme love leads to strength, was shown through the characterization of inan and amari and through the plot twists of king saran and baba's deaths. through the devastating events of inan almost dying, and baba being killed, gave amari and zeilie the strength to do things they thought they weren’t capable of.
