a description: if my home town was a person.
if the city, town or village where you live was a person, what kind of person would it be? describe the ‘personality’ of the place where you live.

l'aquila

i live in l'aquila, a small town located in the center of italy, surrounded by high mountains. there are about 70 000 inhabitants.

in italian "l'aquila" means "the eagle", and it refers to the swabian eagle.
an eagle is also found on the coat of arms, which is made up of an eagle, in the center, and the words "immota" and "manet" to the sides.

it's the town's motto, and in latin it means "stands still".
i think "immota manet" are the words that better describe l'aquila; here's why:

it would be a still and quiet place to live in, if it wasn't for the fact that in 2009 it sadly became famous for an earthquake that completely destroyed the town.
it isn't the fisrt time something like that happens, though.

l'aquila was destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout the centuries. the first time was just 3 years after her foundation.

sometimes it was a war, sometimes an earthquake, but now, in 2019, she's still there, in the same place where she was firstly built 800 years ago.

if she was a person, she would certainly be very hard working and determined to reach her goals.

furthermore, winters here can be harsh. in january and febraury temperature often drops down to -20°c or below, and l'aquila is said to be the coldest city in italy.
many visitors and tourists say that mountains make them feel uncomfortable, as if they were blocked there.
wherever you look you can see high peaks covered in snow. i understand that this may be intimidating for someone who isn's used to it, but personally, i feel protected rather than blocked.

so, in conclusion, if i had to imagine l'aquila was a person, i'd see a reserved hard-working woman, in her adulthood, who has gone through many issues in her life, but she never gave up, and is looking forward to return to normality once again.
