This is a simple sentence.  Compound sentences have two independent clauses that are combined by a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction.  Those are known as FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).  For example, It was a dark and stormy night, yet the truckers continued down Steep Canyon, would be the only way this could be compound.  'During the dark and stormy night' is simply a prepositional phrase to add information to the sentence.
