in 2015, millennials became the largest segment of the workforce. the millennial generation includes those born between the approximate years of 1980 and 1995. as baby boomers have begun to retire, millennials have started graduating from college and entering their employment years. an influx of millennials to the workplace has brought increasing changes to office culture.

the average millennial stays at one job for two years. compared to generation x members (born 1960–1979), who remain in one position for an average of five years, and baby boomers (born 1940–1959), 41 percent of whom stay at their jobs for more than 20 years, this is a decidedly brief length of time. millennials have different goals than their predecessors, and this makes them more likely to switch companies or even careers.

millennials are a generation used to instant access of information. consequently, they seek out different ways to climb the company ladder. like generation x, they have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, which makes them independent. once they’re assigned a task, they don’t want much interference. they want to get the job done.

the biggest challenge for millennials’ superiors in the workplace is knowing how to them grow and perform better. millennials are looking for coaches, not bosses. to older generations, this may sound like they aren’t responsible or able to deal with criticism. but that isn’t the case.

actually, millennials are ready to work hard and make changes, but they feel they deserve respect. more than anything, they want explanations and feedback. explaining why something is important motivate them better. they want to ensure that they’re doing things correctly and that their bosses are happy with their work.

by 2030, millennials will make up 75 percent of the labor force. with this generational shift, and with the increased ability to work remotely via computer, the office environment of yesterday may be gone forever. ultimately, millennials aren’t looking for anything unusual. they want to be treated with respect, engaged in interesting tasks, and given incentives to work hard. aren’t we all looking for those qualities in a job?
