For example, Rukmani is a woman who bears a lot of children. Every time a new  child is born , Rukmani's family becomes hungrier; their rice harvest is always destroyed because of bad weather conditions. Rukmani and her husband, Nathan, do not own their land; they rent it. This makes their economic situation more difficult since they have to use the money they get from selling some of  the rice to the landonwers.  When Rukmani's children grow up, they do ilegal things to get food. For example , one son is killed for theft and the daugther becomes a prostitute to get food.
